The Linux World has been used to multiple virtual desktops for a long time. Its a very useful feature to have. Imagine using one desktop for your Office Work, one for your browsing, one for personal work, etc.

It not only gives you some additional privacy when your boss comes over to your desk, but it helps declutter your desktop also!

This is one feature that does not come built into Windows for some strange reason.

To Microsoft’s credit, they did realize a Power Toy to achieve this functionality. It does not provide the same level of flexibility you get on Linux, buts is a step in the right direction.

The Virtual Desktop Manager for Windows XP is what you need. It provides 4 virtual desktops that you can use — each with its own wallpaper, etc.

After installation you need to enable the toolbar by right clicking on the taskbar and selecting Toolbar -> Desktop Manager. You will then see the following showing up in your Toolbar:

Each number represents a virtual desktop. Right click on “MSVDM” and you can configure the shortcut keys and wallpaper for each virtual desktop.
