8+ sites to transfer large files

You might come across several situations where you wanted to email large attachments. By large, I mean really large. What if you zipped up all your wedding photographs? It could run into a few 100MBs even after zipping.

Surely, no email server configured the right way will accept such large attachments. What do you do in such situations?

There are several websites that come into play here that can be used to transfer files. All you need to do is to upload the file to this website and then share the link to that file. As simple as it gets. The files will get deleted after a few days from the server. Simple and sweet!

I’ve listed a few sites below that can be used for this. My personal favorite is YouSendIt.

YouSendIt provides a simple interface to upload files and to write an email along with the link. Each email can contain only 1 link (uploaded file) in their free version. This in itself is not too bad. You can even install a Desktop Client which makes it more convenient to upload files. Up to 2GB is free.

FlyUpload provides an extremely clean interface but does a great job in transfering files. Just like YouSendIt, you can send files up to 2GB for free.

RapidShare is another highly popular website for fire sharing, even though in my opinion, it is abused more often than not for sharing pirated software. You can use a free account for downloads with lots of limitations, or cough up some money to get a premium account which is free of all restrictions.

MegaUpload works on similar principles to RapidShare, but at most times has restrictions on free accounts which are country specific. What this means is that even if you have not downloaded a single file, your geographic region could have exhausted the limit for the day, and you have to wait for long before you can proceed with the download. The Premium account is free of such restrictions though.

DropSend allows you to send files upto 1GB in size and also use the site as an online storage service.

MailBigFile allows you to email files of up to 100MB in size. Their Pro accounts enable you to send larger files.

zUpload allows you to send 500MB attachments at a time.

TransferBigFiles allows you to send files of up to 1 GB in size. They use Amazon S3 for file storage. Files are retained for a minimum of 5 days on their server.

I am sure this list is not exhaustive. If you know of any other good file sharing/transfer website, do drop in a comment below. Also, share your experiences with the above services.
