Have you tried OpenSolaris yet?

OpenSolaris is an operating system that provides a rich platform for building and running applications. The majority of the OpenSolaris code base is distributed under an OSI-approved open source license.  OpenSolaris supports systems that use SPARC and x86 families of processor architectures. OpenSolaris is well-suited for desktops, laptops, servers, and data centers.

Like most operating systems, you can install this within a Virtual Machine like VMWare, or VirtualBox; just in case you don’t have another system handy for a dedicated installation.

You can download the CD/DVD images for free from the OpenSolaris website.

Here are a couple of screenshots of OpenSolaris running within VirtualBox (via jamesselvakumar’s blog)

If you are interested in a Student Edition of OpenSolaris, refer this blog post at Intel.
