OpenSolaris is an operating system that provides a rich platform for building and running applications. The majority of the OpenSolaris code base is distributed under an OSI-approved open source license. OpenSolaris supports systems that use SPARC and x86 families of processor architectures. OpenSolaris is well-suited for desktops, laptops, servers, and data centers.
Like most operating systems, you can install this within a Virtual Machine like VMWare, or VirtualBox; just in case you don’t have another system handy for a dedicated installation.
You can download the CD/DVD images for free from the OpenSolaris website.
